Connections

Her elderly face bore the marks of a tough life.  She was doing her job, standing in the mall food court handing out Bourbon Chicken samples to passersby.  She would have looked much more at home on the streets of China.  I even imagined her following her entrepreneur children to America to live with them and work with them in their business.  Her expression was one of silent resignation.  She was there in body, but not in spirit.

The next moment her air shifted dramatically, from boredom to engagement.  Her “inner light” came on.  She was trying to catch someone’s eye in the crowd.  She was virtually reaching out with her body language, trying to make a connection.  Then I saw the subject of her gaze – a young mother, also of Asian descent, with her toddler.  I could see the elderly woman’s desire to speak a kindness, to reassure the younger woman that she knew all about her current life stage and share some motherly wisdom.  She made two or three almost desperate attempts to make eye contact to no avail.  The young mother, absorbed in trailing her toddler, never even knew she was there.  She passed back into the crowd as the older woman’s light faded back to gray.

Our need for human connection is universal, even among strangers.  We all share an underlying need to be known and to be safe.  In public it appears as the involuntary expression on another’s face that you have undoubtedly seen as I have, the one that silently says, “Tell me I am alright.”  Among our friends and family the words can seem very casual (“Wanna grab cup of coffee some time?”, “Play with me”, “How was your day?”, or “What’s up dude?”) but the need for a true connection is the same.  These moments are fleeting and fragile.  Unless we are paying attention, we will miss most of them.  What might it look like if we took the time to really see the stranger, to listen below the words of our loved ones, to have the love and patience to always communicate grace and safety by our words and actions?

Throughout this journey, Julie and I have been blessed to build relationships with some amazing people who are all unique, but share one thing in common: they each have a history of incarceration.  Some are struggling through the challenges of reentry.  Others are still incarcerated, looking with hope toward the day they get their chance to walk free again.  Throughout February, we would like to introduce you to some of these men.  Please like our Facebook page here to follow their stories, connect with them, and learn about the challenges they have faced or will face in reentering society after incarceration.

Peace,

art

Monthly Donation Drive
We need supporters to donate $10 per month.  WAIT—STAY WITH US!  No guilt here about lattes, lunches, or cutbacks you need to make.  We know you’re a hardworking, law-abiding, tax-paying citizen.  We trust you would run into the burning building to save a child.  You help old ladies across the street and save kittens from trees.  You are a good, responsible person.  All we’re asking for is the money you saved for that speeding ticket you didn’t get or the library fines you avoided.  It’s easy to donate and tax deductible.  Click here to set up your monthly donation today.

It’s (Nearly) Official
We have begun the 501c3 non-profit application process.  We remain under Perception Funding which is a local organization that helps launch other ministries.  Well it’s time to take the training wheels off and go it on our own.  Becoming our own 501c3 will give us access to a broader range of foundation and public grants.  It also communicates clearly that we are here to stay and invested in long-term sustainability.  If all goes as planned, we should have our 501c3 status by mid- to late-summer.  In the meantime your donation is still tax deductible.

Les Miserables

I, along with a bajillion others, decided to go see Les Miserables this past week. Believe it or not, prior to this outing I had never read or seen a broadway production or movie of this story. I had seen clips and knew the gist of the plot. I have always meant to read the almost 1500 page book - but have not gotten to it. I am determined to add this to my list of to-dos for 2013. What's on your list?

As I mentioned before - there were a bajillion people out to see the movie. Many of them know the Les Mis story. They have been anticipating it and brought their tissues, were willing to overlook the crowds, the cost, the thirty minutes of previews, and the sticky floors to see this classic heart wrenching story. All the while knowing there will be collective tears shed publicly throughout, and the ending is only bittersweet.

It's certainly not the most entertaining movie one could see this holiday season. This story obviously speaks to so many something far greater, more powerful, and deep.

Mercy. Grace. Love.

Mentor Training

We began training our first mentor training class on Tuesday, December 4th. We had an excellent turnout, with four friends of N2LIFE and four mentor prospects joining us to discuss what it takes to be a prison mentor. Our class finishes up next Tuesday. Stay tuned for additional classes to be scheduled soon. Thanks to Heartland Community Church for the meeting space and to Cynthia Crawford of Inner City Church for providing the snacks!

Lansing Correctional Facility Classes

We are currently teaching our second class to the inmates at Lansing Correctional Facility (LCF). The class is called "Getting Motivated To Change", and it looks at what motivation is and how to use positive self-talk and accountability to accomplish goals for life change. These are subjects that we are experts on, so it has been very enjoyable examining these issues with the participants. We plan to continue to train other classes going forward in the new year.

Year-End Giving

As you plan your year-end giving, please consider donating to N2LIFE Project. We are raising all of our funds in a grassroots manner. This means we are dependent on people in the community catching our vision and being moved to take action as a result. Become part of the movement and sow seeds of hope and freedom in dark places. The Difficulty of Freedom

This is my daughter spreading her wings on the school’s sidewalk last week on Halloween. It took her a few tries raising her arms, walking back and forth, before she finally let it carry her and began to “fly”. She's growing up and losing some of her more child-like inclinations.

I came home the other day to find my son listening to music and still doing the dishes. He had been doing them when I left for an appointment - an hour and a half earlier. I entered the kitchen and shot off rapid fire questions regarding his delay. He admitted he'd been goofing around. I appreciated his honesty, obvious as it was, but only expressed my frustration that he had not begun his schoolwork. His eyes lightly swelled with tears as I left the room.

Underdog

I root for the underdog.

In the past I've never really thought to figure out why, it's just something I know in my gut.  Like a huge, messy mass that twists within me. I couldn't get rid of it if I tried. It's entangled with my thoughts, my emotions, my beliefs and values.  It's so much a part of me, it's not going to let go - even when I want it to.

It's not always easy rooting for the underdog, especially if you're an early bird.  You get a lot of strange looks.  It's easier to like winners, to be with winners, to support winners, be seen with winners...

July Update

Where we've been:

July has been an active month! We completed the Investment in Excellence program with Pacific Accord, and are truly excited and inspired by the lessons learned. Much of the information gleaned from this curriculum is critical to us personally, our clients, and to our program. We highly encourage you to check it out! Investment in Excellence is designed to unlock the hidden potential in leaders and organizations, but it's applicable to everyone. Contact Allen Beck or Denise Mills, and tell them we sent you!

We also met with the dynamic duo Derk and Gina Hanna from Beauty for Ashes this past month. They walk beside men and women in prison and provide classes that assist in a transformation that brings hope for the future, restoration in their relationships, and a trusted place within their community. We have plans to partner with the ministry and provide mentors and support when their clients are released. We are excited about the possibilities of this alliance!

Please "Like" us on Facebook! There you will see statistics, thoughtful or inspiring quotes that reflect our values, and other programs that we champion.

Opportunities:

Dessert!!!

Thanks to the generous hospitality and support of Becca Korphage for opening up her home, we had our first “Awareness and Action” (dessert party) event! This was such an encouraging experience for us, where we gained support and additional connections. We were able to share our hearts, vision, and program plans in a relaxed and informal setting. We enjoyed the thoughtful dialog that was spurred by the attendees. These events do many things:
  • they educate the community of problems,
  • they identify how we and others meet those needs, and
  • they involve the community by highlighting opportunities to help.

These events are critical to our mission. If you would you be interested in hosting (either in your home or elsewhere), or have questions as to how this gets pulled off, please contact us at n2lifeproject@gmail.com.

Zephyr /ˈzefər/ noun: A soft gentle breeze.”

We are very grateful to have the support of Randy and Cheryl Reinhardt, owners of Zephyr Products in Leavenworth, Kansas. Zephyr employs over 40 minimum-custody inmates from Lansing Prison, equipping them with job skills and support to enable them to reenter the workforce more seamlessly upon release. Thanks Randy and Cheryl! Your heart, experience, and support are a breeze to our backs!

It's Easy!

We have not yet obtained our financial goal in order to take on clients but are making progress. If you are interested in contributing, please go here for further instructions. We have set it up to make things flexible, easy, and straightforward.

Calling all Kansas City area men...

If you are male (or couple), age 25 or older, able to contribute an hour or so once a week or two hours every other week for one year, we need YOU to make a difference in the life of one of our clients!!! Mentoring4Success and N2LIFE will provide you with training and support. We will assess and match you based on interests, background, and life stage. We are currently working on a curriculum that both the client and mentor will go through together, learning together, so conversations have a base and framework from which to launch. Through in-kind donations we also plan to provide fun activities/outings that will be of no extra financial burden to you. Required on your resume: a teachable spirit and a desire to be of help. We expect this experience to be life giving to both you and the client.

Secret Agent

In the month of August we will begin a closed Facebook prayer group. If intercessory prayer is in your gifting and you are wishing to participate with us in this confidential way, please let us know and we will send an invite later in the month. n2lifeproject@gmail.com

Up and coming:

Stay tuned to ESPN 1510 AM “KC Cares, August 13 at 3:00pm. This is a new radio program to raise community awareness of the nonprofits in Kansas City. Tune in as we talk about the nuts and bolts of N2LIFE Project!

We are making our way into Lansing Correctional Facility and solidifying our partnership with Mentoring4Success. We soon begin teaching weekly classes as a part of the Kansas Department of Corrections program that enables prisoners to earn “good time” (early release) credit for completing core classes. After a period of time we will introduce pieces of our own curriculum and gain feedback and input from the clients themselves. These next few months are going to be especially exciting and challenging as things unfold!

Stay tuned to our website, we plan to add a FAQ page in the next month. If you have a burning question that you would like us to answer, let us know @ n2lifeproject@gmail.com!
